Counter-argument: The war was always going to be a long shot

Supporting assertions: Iraq had no institutions ready to support stable nationhood after the fall of Saddam, since they had been crushed during the dictatorship; the wide sectarian rifts, papered over by the iron hand of Saddam, make it hard to create a stable, democratic Iraq; public opinion in Iraq would make its emergence as a democracy profoundly uncomfortable for the U.S. (for instance, their views on the question of Israel)
