Node Text: U.S. needs to wean itself from oil dependency

The United States is dependent on crude oil and petroleum products for almost the entirety of its transportation energy needs, as well as for home heating and various other uses.

The United States does not have enough oil within its own sovereign territory to satisfy its own needs. As of July 2007, the United States was producing 5.1 million barrels of oil per day, while consuming 20.7 million barrels per day. Proven reserves are limited to 21 billion barrels - roughly a 1,000 day supply at current consumption rates.

Oil dependency is harmful to United States national security, as well as its economy.
