Node Text: Public schools can still deliver, but they need money

While there is a certain appeal to the idea of vouchers so that soccer moms can send their kids to private schools, the Chinese adage "be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it" should come to mind. Having taught at both public and private schools, I have seen similar levels of slack jawed indifference in both locales. While any industry, including education, has its buffoons, they are relatively few and far between simply because teaching has become a very tough job. The nidus of the problem is parents who defer to the schools to raise their children, as their own methods are a bit 'unintentional'. As an Advanced Placement teacher I can assure you that the GATE/Honors/AP track is far superior to what a student at any but the most elite private school will receive.
