2008 elections

Although not technically over until the parties respective conventions at the end of the summer, the most fascinating U.S. Presidential primaries in decades have come to a close with improbable victors.

Neither candidate, however, will get much rest as the 2008 U.S. Presidential election stands as the most important in at least 60 years. The economy, foreign relations and the wars in the Middle East are all under heavy stress and the candidates bring very different governing philosophies to each.

Does either of these candidates have what it takes to steer America through the troubles ahead?

Make the case for your candidate:

  • Barack Obama should be elected U.S. President in 2008
  • John McCain should be elected U.S. President in 2008

And don't forget about the Vice Presidential selections. Make a case for your preferred candidate.

Meanwhile, the candidates aren't the only topics of interest in recent U.S. elections:

  • U.S. Electoral College should be replaced by popular vote
  • GOP "voter fraud" claims are themselves fraudulent

Iraq

The success of the Surge in Iraq has shifted American attention to the economy and the upcoming elections. But the rationale behind the surge - political reconciliation - has not transpired, and the additional forces are due to be drawn down. At the same time, McCain and Obama have vastly different visions regarding America's continuing presence in Iraq, as well as how and where to fight Al Qaeda.

  • The Bush administration lost the war in Iraq
  • Iraqi society is too broken to readily accept democracy
  • The media lost the war in Iraq
  • The War in Iraq is a success

Politicization of the DoJ

President George Bush and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez

Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez has moved on, but the controversies surrounding the Justice Department remain in Congressional crosshairs. Fired U.S. Attorneys, political prosecutions, litmus tests and the departure of almost the entire senior leadership have left the public perception that where there's smoke, there's fire.

  • Bush administration misused DoJ to advance GOP interests
  • GOP "voter fraud" claims are themselves fraudulent
  • GOP engaged in campaign of vote and voter suppression
  • Bush administration staff improperly involved in U.S. Attorney firings
